Who slept best last night: Jonathan Wheatley

A year ago, at the Austrian Grand Prix, I vividly remember walking through the paddock and encountering Oliver Hoffmann in the Sauber hospitality area, seemingly more interested in footballer Maximilian Arnold than racing. I questioned the team’s focus on entertaining celebrities rather than improving performance. Red Bull also engages in this practice, as seen during their home race weekend in Spielberg where even Jurgen Klopp made an appearance.

Oliver Hoffmann, similar to Jurgen Klopp in appearance, was the face of the Audi-Sauber project which struggled to find success in Formula 1. Sauber was last in the Constructors’ championship with zero points, leading to Hoffmann’s eventual departure. His power struggle also affected Andreas Seidl, who became the scapegoat despite operating under financial constraints.

Audi eventually replaced both Hoffmann and Seidl with Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley from Ferrari and Red Bull, respectively. Binotto, known for his technical expertise at Ferrari, took on the role of team principal, while Wheatley, successful as sporting director at Red Bull, became the team principal of the Audi project.
